This painting represents the sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917) at age 41 at the time of his first successes. It is painted in profile, its abundant beard follows the line of his nose.

This portrait is made shortly after the order by the state of the monument to the Gates of Hell, fundamental work in the career of Rodin.
